Rootly Market in the Press

Built by a homesteader, for farmers.

The Founder Story

Rootly started the way a lot of things start on a homestead — with too many eggs and not enough people to give them to. Evan Pilot, a Michigan homesteader, was selling eggs, honey, and produce to neighbors through Facebook DMs, text threads, and word of mouth. The logistics were a nightmare: missed messages, no-shows at pickup, no way to know what was available without asking. He thought, “There has to be a better way to do this.”

So he built one. Rootly Market is a local food marketplace where small-scale farmers, bakers, beekeepers, and food makers can set up a storefront in minutes, list their products, and let buyers browse, order, and pick up — all without the Facebook chaos. Think of it as an Airbnb for local food: you search by location, find producers near you, and pick up fresh food directly from the person who grew it.

Rootly launched in Michigan because that’s home. But the problem isn’t Michigan-specific — every state has backyard farmers, cottage bakers, and honey producers who deserve a simpler way to reach their community. The plan is to grow outward, one neighborhood at a time, earning trust the same way local food does: by showing up and being real.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Rootly Market?

Rootly Market is a local food marketplace that connects small-scale farmers, bakers, beekeepers, and food makers with buyers in their community. Sellers create a free storefront, list their products, and buyers browse by location, order online, and pick up directly from the producer. No middlemen, no booth fees, no 4 AM farmers market setups.

How does it work?

Buyers open the app or website, search by location, browse nearby producers, add items to their cart, and check out. They pick up their order during the seller’s availability window. Sellers sign up, build their storefront, list products with photos and prices, and manage orders from a dashboard. The whole flow is designed to feel as natural as texting your neighbor — just without the chaos.

How much does it cost?

Buyers pay a small platform fee (5.5% + $0.80) at checkout — no subscription, no membership. Sellers choose from two plans: Basic ($9.99/mo) or Verified ($24.99/mo), with annual billing discounts available. Every new seller gets a free 1-month trial with no credit card required.

Where is Rootly available?

Rootly is launching in Michigan, where the founder is based. The platform is designed to work anywhere in the United States, and expansion will follow demand — one neighborhood at a time.

Who founded Rootly?

Evan Pilot, a Michigan homesteader and software engineer who built Rootly after getting frustrated selling eggs and produce through Facebook DMs and text messages.
